In our rapidly ageing population already around one million Australians have a swallowing difficulty, also known as dysphagia.
800 000 Australians suffering from dysphagia don’t know about it and are likely to suffer the consequences.
Look out for refusal to eat or choking. In the elderly also look for tiredness, asocial behaviour, depression, poor mobility, poor balance, and falls.
Don’t just ascribe it to “old age”!
This vastly underdiagnosed and poorly managed problem is set to get worse very fast unless we can diagnose more effectively, educate better and manage the problem better.
Action: Increase liquid and calorie intake in a safe way. Do away with outdated spoons and cups. Talk to a speech pathologist, occupational therapist, or medical doctor to obtain the correct diet, correct liquids as well as flow and bolus volume control.
